{"id":80,"date":"2006-11-20T16:41:45","date_gmt":"2006-11-20T21:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kevincreamer.net\/panda\/2006\/11\/20\/dispatches-from-blogistan\/"},"modified":"2006-11-20T16:42:15","modified_gmt":"2006-11-20T21:42:15","slug":"dispatches-from-blogistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kevincreamer.net\/panda\/2006\/11\/20\/dispatches-from-blogistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Dispatches from Blogistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0321395557\/\">Dispatches from Blogistan: A Travel Guide for the Modern Blogger<\/a><\/em>, by Suzanne Stefanac is a good introduction for anyone who is considering a blog.\u00c2\u00a0 I found the first chapters of the book to be a well-told history of free speech.\u00c2\u00a0 Blogging is the next expansion of the power of the printing press, whether you are getting a free blog account at <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.com\/\">WordPress.com<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/start\">Blogger<\/a>, or if you are setting up your own domain as we have done in Center this semester.<\/p>\n<p>Stefanac then gives a tour of the different types of blogs you&#8217;ll find on the web: linkfests, diaries, clubhouses, newsrooms and soapboxes.\u00c2\u00a0 Each type has examples and some good ideas for you depending on the type of blog you are thinking of creating.\u00c2\u00a0 She then provides an overview of the technologies that support today&#8217;s blogs, including permalinks, trackback, wysiwyg editors and spam control.\u00c2\u00a0 There is a review of different blog services, both free and for a fee, as well as blogs that you can set up if you have your own server.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s a chapter on &#8220;Writing That&#8217;s Engaging&#8221;, and information on legal issues.<\/p>\n<p>I also like the fact that Stefanac is encouraging despite things like spam, comment wars and even legal issues like copyright and libel.\u00c2\u00a0 If you take a reasonable approach to your writing and management of your blog, you&#8217;ll find the rewards easily outweigh the liabilities.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to get some additional copies of this book so we in the Center have something we can pass to faculty who are thinking about blogging.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a quick and entertaining read that answers many questions.\u00c2\u00a0 It should also provoke some additional conversations among interested faculty as they think about using blogs as their own printing presses to capture research while extending the conversation globally.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/infocult.typepad.com\/\">Brian Alexander<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mt.middlebury.edu\/middblogs\/ganley\/bgblogging\/\">Barbara Ganley<\/a> for mentioning the book in their <a href=\"http:\/\/connect.educause.edu\/wiki\/SocialSoftwareseminar2006\">EDUCAUSE pre-conference workshop<\/a>!<br \/>\n<!-- technorati tags start --><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:right;font-size:10px;\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/tag\/blogging\" rel=\"tag\">blogging<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/tag\/learning\" rel=\"tag\">learning<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/tag\/blog\" rel=\"tag\">blog<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/tag\/social software\" rel=\"tag\">social software<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/tag\/teaching\" rel=\"tag\">teaching<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/tag\/Web 2.0\" rel=\"tag\">Web 2.0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- technorati tags end --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dispatches from Blogistan: A Travel Guide for the Modern Blogger, by Suzanne Stefanac is a good introduction for anyone who is considering a blog.\u00c2\u00a0 I found the first chapters of the book to be a well-told history of free speech.\u00c2\u00a0 &hellip;
