{"id":76,"date":"2006-10-22T17:17:39","date_gmt":"2006-10-22T21:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kevincreamer.net\/panda\/2006\/10\/22\/arden-the-world-of-shakespeare\/"},"modified":"2006-10-22T17:17:54","modified_gmt":"2006-10-22T21:17:54","slug":"arden-the-world-of-shakespeare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kevincreamer.net\/panda\/2006\/10\/22\/arden-the-world-of-shakespeare\/","title":{"rendered":"Arden: The World of Shakespeare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>c|net has an article, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/A+midsummer+nights+virtual+world\/2008-1043_3-6127496.html\">A Midsummer Night&#8217;s Virtual World<\/a>&#8220;.\u00c2\u00a0 In it they interview Edward Castronova, who has just been announced as a $240,000 grant recipient from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macfound.org\/\">MacArthur Foundation<\/a> for a game he is developing, called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/arden.indiana.edu\/ardenworld.htm\">Arden: The World of Shakespeare<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Castronova is a professor of telecommunications at Indiana University, but he&#8217;s also an expert on the economies of virtual worlds and massively multiplayer online game.<\/p>\n<p>The game appears to be a social science experiment using the world of Shakespeare and his plays as the context, but Castronova seems to understand that the world has to be compelling if he wants to keep people playing so he can perform his studies.<\/p>\n<p>c|net asks him what he thinks Arden will offer that isn&#8217;t possible in other virtual worlds.\u00c2\u00a0 Castronova responds:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:20pt;\"><span style=\"color:#004080;\">At universities, we don&#8217;t have a track record of game design, but we sure as hell have a track record in economic design and political design, social design and the practice of designing human institutions.
